One of the most interesting things I have found in regards to Max and the case of the missing leg has been the amazing reactions I have had by the general public.  I was ready for the stares,  the whispers, and the “I am not looking at you” face…but I wasn’t prepared for what I got.

In general, people are very positive, telling me what an inspiring animal he is. Shocked that he can still do things like walk, and swim, and sit, and lie down.  At first I smiled, but know I sweetly say something smart like, “you should see him get into the trash.” or “since the amputation he has had an overwhelming craving for dirty underwear.”  I know….I should be nicer but many of these interactions take place trying to agent from point A to point B with a fat cocker spaniel, my three legged dog, and my three year old, who will then promptly scream “Mommy cut off Maxie’s leg!”

It’s the people who feel the need to offer their opinion, tell me their dog died from bone cancer 5 minutes after diagnosis, and give free medical advice that I am always shocked by. I have had more people tell me how irresponsible I am for amputating his leg, how they could never do THAT to their dog, and how could I spend SO much money on a dog?? Or the people that cry when the see Max, hug him tightly, and then come over, sigh, and pat my arm.   I just want to scream “Dude! For real?” Or “Glad I am not your dog” or just “Shut up!”

It’s an interesting people watch you get with a 3 legged dog.  Just recently, my dog sitter came, watched Max jump on the bed, and then “quietly whispered, “What happend to his leg?”

Ladies and gents, many senses are enhanced when one goes thru a trauma. However to my knowledge, Max still doesn’t understand English, or he is just ignoring us anyway. But I can. So maybe it’s not my dog that you are bumming out, but the owner.
